How to Choose a Firewood Rack?

1. Load-bearing capacity

First, check the quantity and length of the firewood to be stored. Select a rack with a rated load higher than the actual weight of your firewood.

Make sure the firewood rack can hold the total weight of your firewood pile. Heavy logs may bend weak frames. Choose a model with sufficient load rating, reinforced structure and thick material to avoid deformation or collapse.

2. Area of the placement environment

Measure your available space before purchasing. Consider where you intend to place the firewood rack: backyard, patio, beside the fire pit, garage or shed.

If you have limited space, pick a compact, narrow sized rack. For large open yards, you can choose an extra long model to store more firewood. Also take outdoor conditions into account. For open air outdoor placement fully exposed to sun and rain, prioritize weather resistant frames. If it sits under eaves or inside a shed, anti-rust requirements can be relatively lower.

Make sure there is extra room around the rack for air circulation, which helps keep firewood dry.

3. Local climate

Your local weather conditions greatly influence which firewood rack you should pick.

In rainy, humid or coastal areas with heavy dew and salt laden air, high level anti rust and corrosion resistant materials are critical. Moisture and salt spray will quickly cause ordinary metal racks to rust. It is best to use corten steel material.

How to Maintain

For carbon steel racks, regularly check for scratches on the surface coating. Scratches will expose bare metal and trigger rust. Touch up anti rust paint is recommended once coating peels off. Keep the rack surface clean; wipe off dirt, dew and accumulated snow in time to reduce corrosion.

Do not overload the rack beyond its rated load-bearing capacity. Over stacking logs will cause frame bending, weld cracking and permanent damage.

If possible, place the rack under eaves or partial shelter to avoid long term direct exposure to heavy rain and snow. Inspect screws and connection fittings periodically; tighten loose bolts to keep the whole structure stable.
